The month of May is coming in hot and St. Albert and region are under a heat warning.
On Tuesday afternoon Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a heat warning for the city of Edmonton and surrounding areas. Afternoon highs on Tuesday hit 23 C, with Wednesday slated to hit 30 C and Thursday will hit 31 C. The overnight low on Tuesday night will hit 14 C, with Wednesday sitting at 17 C and Thursday the low will be 16 C.
Residents are advised to consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler times of the day (the hours of 3 to 7 p.m. will be the hottest), take frequent breaks from the heat and spend time in cooled spaces where possible. Residents should also stay hydrated with water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages. Residents should check for pets or children before leaving the vehicle and should never leave anyone or any pet inside a closed vehicle for any length of time.
Environment Canada advises residents to monitor for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, such as high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconciousness.
Infants, children, seniors and people with lung, heat, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions are most susceptible to the negative impacts of the heat, as are outdoor workers and those who are socially isolated.
