Due to fires burning across the region and deteriorating weather conditions, the City of St. Albert has issued a fire restriction.
The City of St. Albert said the decision was to help support surrounding municipalities and effective immediately all open burning is prohibited. Residents will no longer be allowed to use wood burning firepits on driveways, use firepits and barbecues in public parks or use burn barrels and incinerators in rural areas.
The city said residents can still use wood burning firepits in compliance with the local bylaw, and must be used with extra caution. Wood burning fire pits must be fully extinguished before being left unattended. Wood burning firepits must always be used with a screen spark arrestor, the city said in an email.
Propane and natural gas private firepits, barbeques and smokers are still allowed to be used on private property.
Residents are asked to take extra precautions and follow fire safety recommendations. People are reminded to dispose of smoking materials (cannabis, cigarettes, cigars, matches or lighters) properly.
St. Albert Fire Services will continue to monitor the situation and provide any updates at https://stalbert.ca/city/eps/fire/fire-bans/.
To report a fire please call 911.
