LETTER: St. Albert should be in more of an uproar

"If this alone isn't cause to call for a change of name, I don't know what is."

I am curious as to the thoughts and opinions on the St. Albert Catholic school board perpetuating the trauma from residential schools by not changing the name of Vital Grandin Catholic School. In light of the recent discovery in Kamloops of the 200-plus children in a mass, unmarked grave (some as young as three), I would think St. Albert should be in more of an uproar. Germany was not allowed to get away with this after the Second World War. Why is Canada giving itself a pass?

To quote Bishop Vital Grandin in 1875, the Goal of Residential School: "We instill in them a pronounced distaste for the native life so that they will be humiliated when reminded of their origin. When they graduate from our institutions, the children have lost everything Native except their blood."

If this alone isn't cause to call for a change of name, I don't know what is.

Amy Pennoyer, St. Albert
