Last year was an eventful year for St. Albert. Although crime dropped five per cent between January and November  2024 compared to 2023, there were a few notable incidents in the city over the past year, including a drive-by shooting and a deadly stabbing over the summer.

On July 18, 2024, RCMP officers were called to the Riverside community in St. Albert, where they found two teen girls had both suffered from multiple stab wounds. One of the girls, aged 17, died of her injuries. Two days later as a result of a manhunt, officers arrested Kaj Randall, 28. He was charged with first degree murder of the 17-year-old, and the attempted murder of the other teen. Police say he knew both victims.

A GoFundMe for the deceased victim reached over $24,000 in donations.

Randall was also convicted of aggravated assault in a previous stabbing incident in 2016, where he entered a family's home and stabbed a pregnant woman. He remains in custody and is due to appear in court for a preliminary inquiry in March 2025.

On June 29 2024, a St. Albert teen was shot after trespassing on a rural property, owned by 84-year-old man Jim Bregin. It was reported by the Gazette that Bregin was concerned that people would trespass on the property to steal parts from junked vehicles, of which he kept hundreds.

Neighbours described their shock of the incident at the time. Brian Hardiman said he thought of Bregin as "a nice guy," even though they had only met once at the time.

Bregin is set to appear in court for a two day preliminary hearing on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25, 2025.

St. Albert also saw a dramatic drive-by shooting take place at the end of the summer. On Sept. 2, 2024, police responded to a shooting that occurred following a confrontation, which led to an unidentified man to fire a gun into a vehicle with three teens.

Kayte Donnelly in her vehicle at night with two friends, both age 17. As a white van drove past them, they flipped off the driver, believing the vehicle to be a group of friends riding in a white SUV.

They drove off, ending up at an intersection on Levausser Road and Grandin Road. The white van approached behind them, and the unidentified suspect fired a gun into Donnelly's vehicle, then fled the scene. Donnelly's boyfriend was shot and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Donnelly and her other friend were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

On Sept. 4 2024, RCMP posted a photo of the suspect vehicle, a white van with tinted windows. No arrests were made.
