While you’ll find all the physio, massage, and pelvic health treatments you’d expect from a physiotherapy clinic, what sets The Joint apart is the passion each team member brings to understanding and treating every patient’s unique needs. And it’s not just about what hurts; conversations often include patient history, goals, lifestyle, and even what they did last weekend. It creates a full-circle, relationship-based approach to providing care.
Founded in August 2024, The Joint was born out of a shared vision: humans treating humans. Their team, many of whom worked together in the St. Albert community for years, reunited under one roof to build a clinic rooted in values like collaboration, authenticity, and educating and empowering every patient that comes through the door.
“While many clinics treat symptoms, we treat people,” shares co-owner James Dean, BScPT. “Ultimately, we don’t believe in cookie-cutter solutions. We believe in care that’s as unique as the person receiving it, and that goes far beyond just the injury.”
“Patients should never feel like they’re just another number,” adds co-owner Bobby McGugan, MScPT. “Whether you’re an athlete, a busy parent, or recovering from surgery, we want you to feel heard, supported, and empowered.”
Their people-first philosophy extends into the community. The Joint actively supports local events and causes such as the St. Albert Road Race, the St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon, the St. Albert Sailfish Swim Club, and the Cookie Race hosted by the St. Albert Nordic Ski Club.
“We believe care shouldn't stop at the clinic door. Our goal is to promote health and movement across all stages of life,” the co-founders smile.
Christine Christianson, MScPT, notes, “We’ve been working with local senior homes to offer free fall prevention clinics. We also collaborate with other local organizations such as the St. Albert Sturgeon Hospice Association (SASHA) and create opportunities, such as our Pass the Book contest, to support our community. Thanks to our patients, we donated 377 books to the SHAVA Bookstore (in support of the Sturgeon Community Hospital) and to local schools.”
Despite being community and people focused, offering modern, evidence-based, and well-rounded care is the backbone of The Joint’s treatment approach.
“When patients understand why they’re doing a certain treatment, they feel more empowered and motivated,” explains Graham Glennie, MScPT. “Our commitment to research and using top-of-the-line methods and treatments fuels us as practitioners. It’s great to be working with such a knowledgeable team.”
Candace Mazur, MScPT, who also leads pelvic health services at the clinic, adds, “We want to offer our patients options - even ones they might not have considered. For example, pelvic health impacts everything from strength and stability to confidence. It’s often overlooked, but pelvic health therapy is absolutely life-changing.” She jokes, “Some might even call it a core value.”
The clinic’s registered massage therapists, including Karen Duffy, RMT, round out the team. She knows that massage is much more than just relaxation. “Massage Therapy plays a huge role in balancing recovery and injury prevention. It’s good for everybody - whether you’re a marathoner or a weekend gardener.”
In less than a year, The Joint Physiotherapy has become a trusted local hub for expert care delivered with heart. Whether you’re looking for a new care provider, wondering where your previous physiotherapist went, or you’re looking for a team who just gets it - you’ll find it at The Joint.
