St. Albert RCMP provide residents with safety tips for enjoying the outdoors alone

As residents of St. Albert enjoy the fresh air and summer weather, the St. Albert RCMP providing residents with safety tips to enjoy the outdoors alone.
RCMP
RCMP report there is an "unfolding event" happening in the North West quadrant of the city. The RCMP are asking residents to avoid the area.

As the weather gets nice many people walk, run or bike alone as part of their daily workout routine or to enjoy St. Albert's parks, trails and green spaces. However, the St. Albert RCMP say being alone outdoors can make individuals look like an easy target.

To help residents stay safe and confident, RCMP are sharing the following safety tips:

  • Stay in well-populated and well-lit areas.
  • Avoid any hidden trails or shortcuts through secluded areas and change the route you take.
  • At night, wear reflective clothing.
  • Carry a cell phone with you and make sure it's charged in case you need to call 911.
  • Avoid wearing headphones or earbuds, as they can prevent you from hearing what is happening around you. This can make it easier for someone to sneak up on you.
  • Stay focused on what is happening around you. Avoid texting, phone calls or looking at social media.
  • Walk with confidence and keep your head up. This can make a difference in how someone perceives you.
  • Avoid situations or people that make you feel unsafe. It is okay to say no and tell a person to leave you alone and walk away.

The St. Albert RCMP and Municipal Enforcement regularly patrol parks and green spaces using marked vehicles, bikes and golf carts to help keep the community safe.

If you have been enjoying the outdoors alone and come across someone or something that doesn't feel right, the St. Albert RCMP are encouraging you to report this behaviour. You can contact the RCMP Detachment at 780-458-7700.
