The St. Albert RCMP wants to remind drivers to stay safe and responsible while driving to help keep Alberta's roads free from dangerous and aggressive driving.
The Alberta RCMP laid 9,419 charges related to dangerous and aggressive driving in 2024. Police say reckless behaviours such as road rage, excessive speeding, distracted driving and tailgating put drivers, pedestrians and other road users at risk.
To help reduce aggressive driving and keep the roads safer the St. Albert RCMP advises motorists to keep the following tips in mind.
- Allow extra time for commutes to reduce stress and avoid rushing.
- Obey speed limits and adapt driving for various road conditions.
- Remain patient, follow traffic laws, respect other drivers and avoid risky maneuvers.
- Stay calm in tense situations -- If you witness aggressive driving, do not respond with aggressive driving.
- Keep your distance – if confronted by an aggressive driver or tailgated, do not engage.
- If someone confronts you, lock your doors, stay in your vehicle, and leave when it's safe.
- If someone is following you, do not go home -- drive to the nearest police station or a populated area where you can call the police.
- Witness and accident – note key details such as the vehicle's colour, make, model and license plate number, and a description of the driver. Report the incident as soon as possible.
- Call 911 if you or someone else is in immediate danger due to an aggressive driver.
