The wildfire burning in the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area has doubled in size since 2 p.m. on May 7, now covering an estimated 3,000 hectares. Fire officials warn that high winds expected to continue into May 9 could drive further spread.
The evacuation alert area remains unchanged and continues to apply to all properties east of Range Road 223 to the North Saskatchewan River and between Township Road 580 south to Township Road 570, including the Town of Redwater.
No additional structures have been lost beyond the one reported on May 3, officials confirmed. Fire crews remain on the ground working to contain the blaze and protect property.
“Evacuated residents are understandably concerned about perishable goods and the status of their homes,” officials stated. “
However, this remains an active fire situation, and our top priority continues to be the safety of the public and emergency responders.”
The mandatory evacuation order also remains in place for everyone located between Range Road 213 east to Range Road 203 and from Township Road 580 south to the North Saskatchewan River.
Residents urged to register
Officials stress that all residents from the evacuation zone must register with the Reception Centre, either in person at the Morinville Leisure Centre (25126 Secondary Highway 642) or by phone at 587-570-6610, to confirm they have left safely.
Roads within the evacuation area remain closed, and residents are being asked to stay clear to give crews space to operate.
