A former student and teacher and current parent is running to represent Morinville on St. Albert’s Catholic school board this fall.

Morinville resident Kelsey Hynes has registered to run in the Greater St. Albert Catholic School trustee election in Ward 2 (Morinville, Legal, Bon Accord).

Married with two children who attend GSACRD schools, Hynes is a graduate of GSACRD schools and used to teach at schools in the district such as Morinville Community High. She chairs the parents council at École Notre Dame Elementary in Morinville and has previously served on the councils for Holy Family Catholic and Morinville Community High. She also sits on the Town of Morinville library board.

“I just really want to be able to support the great work that’s going on in the district and make sure our kids, and more importantly our teachers, have what they need in the classroom to be successful,” she said.

Hynes said she understands how schools work from her time as a teacher, and knows how to advocate as a member of several parents councils. Her day job as a business analyst has also made her skilled at finding ways to improve how things get done.

Hynes said her top priorities if elected would be to work with the province to reduce class sizes and reverse cuts to education funding.

“Our teachers are doing a lot with less and I don’t think that’s right.”

Hynes said she would bring her experience as a GSACRD graduate, teacher, and parent to the board to make the best decisions for students.

The GSACRD trustee election is Oct. 20. Seven seats are up for grabs — five for Ward 1 (St. Albert) and two for Ward 2 (Morinville, Legal, Bon Accord). Visit www.gsacrd.ab.ca/trustees/2025-trustee-election-information-for-candidates for a list of registered candidates.
