St. Albert-Sturgeon River MP Michael Cooper expressed disappointment with Liberals earning another term in government as he addressed a crowd of his supporters at the St. Albert Rugby Club.
"It's the greatest privilege of my life to serve as the Member of Parliament for our community, and I'm honoured and humbled by the decisive result tonight," Cooper said after securing re-election in St. Albert–Sturgeon River on Monday.
While the Liberals, now led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, will continue to govern nationally with a minority, Cooper said the local results offered encouragement for Conservatives.
"The national result is not what we hoped it would be. But the good news in what is no doubt a disappointing night nationally is that the Liberals have been kept to a minority government," Cooper said.
Cooper, a member of the Conservative Party of Canada, has represented the area since 2015. The 2025 election marked the first contest under the newly created riding of St. Albert–Sturgeon River, which was formed following the 2022 federal redistribution.
The new district includes St. Albert, Sturgeon County, and parts of Lac Ste. Anne County, combining areas previously part of St. Albert–Edmonton, Sturgeon River–Parkland, and Yellowhead.
Early returns showed Cooper winning by a comfortable margin.
Nationally, Carney’s Liberals fell short of a majority but are expected to maintain power with the support of opposition parties.
In his election night remarks, Cooper thanked his campaign team, volunteers, and supporters across the riding.
“This result is not about me — it’s about our community and the values we share," he said.
Final election results are expected to be confirmed in the coming days.
