Family, friends and community members will gather in memory of Logan Hunter for the fifth annual Logan Hunter Memorial Golf Tournament at the Quarry golf course in Edmonton on July 10.
The tournament is in honour of Logan, a young hockey player who tragically lost his life in the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash. The funds from the tournament go towards supporting causes he was passionate about.
"He loved golf and so in our hearts we knew we wanted to keep his legacy going and alive and get all of his friends and family and our support groups together to celebrate his life and celebrate all of the things that are important to him, that were always important to him," said his mother Shauna Nordstrom.
Last year, the Logan Hunter Memorial Fund raised $20,000, which was donated to various organizations and causes Logan was passionate about, explained his mom. They donated to Zoe's Animal Rescue, Saving Grace Animal Society, Junior Golf tournaments at the Sturgeon Valley Golf and Country Club, Jessie's House, Jasper Minor Hockey and sponsored two players with the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club.
"This year we had little extra money, so we got to sponsor two players, we were pretty excited about that," said Nordstrom, explaining that it was the first donation they made with the memorial fund in honour of Logan.
Nordstrom said that being able to do good in Logan's name helps her feel good and find happiness.
"I mean, there are a lot of dark days yet, and there always will be," she said. "I mean, it's stuff [donating] that we just want to smile about."
The tournament attracts around 200 golfers each year. Nordstrom shared that she's proud to see Logan's legacy and memory remain important to others.
"It is a great day, I look forward to seeing everybody that day," said Nordstrom. "We're out playing, and when I hear laughter from other holes – of people together, I just know that this is the best thing we can do."
