Kokopelli's holiday concert

Every year the Kokopelli choirs of Shumayela (12-16), Kokopelli (14-24) and Oran (adult) grow both musically and spiritually.

The choristers have made a name for themselves with music from around the world and their annual seasonal concert Wintersong is globally all embracing.

Adding a fresh dimension to the music, Kikimasu, a new choir for children eight to 12 years, makes its public debut.

One of the major works the 200 voices present is a chorus from Handel's baroque Messiah (For Unto Us a Child is Born). The choirs will also perform a duplicate setting of the same text with Nigerian rhythms on djembe that change the song to Anuworo Ayi Out Nwa.

Of particular interest is the world premiere of Aurora, a Latin-percussive work composed by Finland's Jussi Chydenius of the renowned a cappella group Rajaton.

And when the lush voices of the four choirs join to sing Josh Groban's Believe from Polar Express, conductor Kathleen Skinner believes it will raise the roof of McDougall Church.

St. Albert singers adding their potpourri of talent are Wade Brown and brothers Steve and Tyler Wenger.

Wintersong is held today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. McDougall United Church is at 100125 – 101 St. Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for students/seniors. Call 780-420-1757 or go online at www.tixonthesquare.ca.

Moosehead Christmas Show

Norm Henze, currently with Coaster 44, was a huge part of building the open jam music scene in St. Albert and Dale Collins has been into jams since the early 1970s.

Both St. Albert guitarists are hanging their hats at the Moosehead Christmas Show at LBs open jam this coming Tuesday at 9 p.m.

"Norm has performed with over 1,000 musicians in the past six years and he has a knack of sitting in the background with a smart, clean guitar sound," said Moosehead host Mark Ammar.

And Collins is another familiar face who built his early style around the music of Joe Walsh, David Gilmour and Jimmy Page.

The jam is at LBs Pub, located at 23 Akins Drive. There is no cover charge.
