Two people, including a St. Albert man, were killed Friday in a high-speed head-on crash near Tomahawk.

Michael Deutch, 32, died before emergency crews arrived at the scene of the wreck about two kilometres south of the community on Highway 759.

The wreck occurred around 6:30 p.m. last Friday night on the highway near the tiny hamlet northeast of Drayton Valley.

Deutch was driving a silver Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on the highway when police believe he entered the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Jeep Cherokee.

Cpl. Greg Gerbrandt, with the Drayton Valley RCMP, who responded to the call said, based on the information they have, they believe the Grand Prix entered the wrong lane, causing the collision.

“All we can go by is what we see there and there are some skid marks from the Jeep and none from the silver car and the Jeep looks to be taking evasive action toward the shoulder.”

Gerbrandt said unfortunately, because both drivers were killed in the crash, there is little for investigators to work from.

“The drivers never regained consciousness and there were no witnesses to the collision.”

Norman Botterill, 22, from Drayton Valley was the driver of the Jeep and was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital, by STARS air ambulance, but he never regained consciousness and died in hospital.

Gerbrandt said at this point they are unable to definitively rule anything in or out, as to the reason why the Grand Prix entered the wrong lane.
