Hospital foundation raising friends and funds

The hammers are still pounding away at the Sturgeon Community Hospital's new emergency department. Meanwhile, the non-profit group that provides extra funding wants to fill the finished site with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

The Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation is putting on its 18th annual Friend Raiser Gala this weekend. With awesome food and a splendid atmosphere, there will also be a DJ and art auction for entertainment. Events co-ordinator Doug Campbell promised some choice items for bids, including a one-hour ride in a vintage jet.

Campbell explained that the group never rests. "The foundation has a number of ongoing events in order to meet its goals," he said, referring not just to the annual gala but also the Heritage Golf Classic that takes place in June. There is also the Sturgeon Hospital House that is now finished and the Chateau River Ridge home tour at 53 River Ridge Road. That project has been pretty successful with over 2,200 visits so far.

All of these fundraisers significantly help the hospital foundation reach its current pledge of $200,000 to the hospital. The foundation has its eyes on some cutting-edge enhancements for the emergency department including bariatric ventilation equipment and monitoring systems.

The gala takes place on Saturday at the Sutton Place Hotel in downtown Edmonton. Cocktails start at 6:30 p.m. Some tickets are still available at $160 each and can be obtained by calling 780-418-7361. For more information visit www.sturgeonhospitalfoundation.org.

The sight of pink

There are a lot more pink heads popping up around town, a sure sign the St. Valentine's Day Hair Massacure is ramping up. An event this weekend will help promote the cause and it comes with the tantalizing aroma of cooked meat.

The annual fundraiser's organizers are setting up the event Saturday at Sobeys from noon to 3 p.m. You can meet the MacDonald family, enjoy the free barbecue and take advantage of the opportunity to buy your very own Kali Pink hair dye and colour your hair at home.

Organizer Tammy MacDonald explained that the event really helps to raise awareness.

"The idea of the barbecue is that it lures people to the store; they smell the barbecue."

She said that a similar event last weekend helped raise more than $400. Visit www.hairmassacure.com for more info.

Haiti update

Relief efforts continue to pop up and grow. There are reports now that several local schools have activities to provide support in the works. The fundraising show organized by the Kite family will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening at the Tap House Bar at 9020 McKenney Avenue. According to the Facebook page dedicated to the event, more than 160 people already plan on attending.
