Edmonton fire captain from Morinville charged with child pornography has trial scheduled

A Morinville man and Edmonton fire captain who is charged with multiple child pornography-related offences has had his trial scheduled.

Christopher McDonald, 55, was arrested on Jan. 16, 2024 by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT), with the help of the Morinville RCMP following an investigation by ALERT's internet child exploitation (ICE) unit which began in October 2023. McDonald, a fire captain with Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) is charged with possession and accessing child sexual abuse materials, as well as unauthorized possession of firearms and unsafe storage of firearms.

McDonald's five day trial by judge alone is scheduled for March 9 to March 13, 2026. His next appearance in court will be for a pre-trial conference on May 5, 2025 at the Court of King's Bench in Edmonton, Alta.

On March 24, a spokesperson for EFRS confirmed in an email that McDonald is still an employee with the City of Edmonton, although he is currently on leave.
