BREAKING: Family pet dies after fire on Grandview Ridge

St. Albert Fire Chief Everett Cooke said that although the point of origin is known, the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

A row home suffered extensive smoke damage and the loss of a family pet after a fire in Grandin last night

St. Albert fire crews responded to a fire at 36 Grandview Ridge, a multifamily residential structure, on the evening of Dec. 23.

Just before 8 p.m., St. Albert Fire Services received a call about a fire at a row housing structure.

"Crews were on scene in a matter of moments. Although we didn't call lost stop until sometime later, the fire was brought under control very quickly and crews spent an extra amount of time looking for extension into the walls and such to make sure the fire was completely extinguished," St. Albert Fire Chief Everett Cooke said.

The City of St. Albert responded to the blaze with three engines, a rescue unit and a platoon chief.

"Due to the potential severity of the fire, we did call in mutual aid from the City of Edmonton, who provided a response to us as well. Just as a precaution," said Cooke.

According to Cooke, fire crews know that the blaze "originated in the attached garage to the structure, however it is still under investigation and the cause has not yet been determined."

Cooke said that the responding crews "were able to contain the fire to the area of origin, however there was extensive smoke damage throughout the entire structure. The home in question, as well as one of the neighbouring dwellings, causing the family to have to move and be displaced for the evening."

Cooke said there were no injuries to any persons as a result of the fire, however there was the loss of a family pet.
