The City of St. Albert issued a fire ban this evening, bringing the city in line with many municipalities across Alberta following the provincial government's state of emergency declaration over the weekend as wildfires continue to burn across the province.

Under the ban all outside fires, whether on public or private property, are prohibited. Rural residents are also prohibited from using incinerators or burn barrels until the ban is lifted.

The use of propane and natural gas fire-pits and barbecues on private property is still permitted, although the city says residents should be extra cautious.

“Residents are asked to follow fire ban regulations, use extra caution with propane and natural gas outdoor appliances, and dispose of smoking materials (cannabis, cigarettes, cigars, matches or lighters) properly,” reads a city news release from May 8.

The fire ban will be in place until further notice.
