A Morinville man charged with the murder of his common-law wife will go to trial on charges of second-degree murder.

James Gary Urbaniak was ordered to stand trial following a three-day preliminary hearing last week.

Urbaniak’s common-law wife, Jessica Ryan Martel, was found dead in the couple’s Morinville home on April 29.

Over a dozen members of the Martel family were in the courtroom for the proceedings. A publication ban prohibits the Gazette from reporting any of the evidence that was presented during the trial.

Urbaniak was taken into custody within days of Martel’s death and he has been held without bail since his arrest.

A trial date has not yet been set.
