LETTER: Red Willow Trail network needs expanding

I do not envy the budget process council has just completed. However, I am perplexed by some decisions, notably the decision to not proceed with completion of the Oakmont portion of Red Willow Trail, yet continue to proceed with an extraordinary effort to develop wide promenades with the reworking of north St Albert Trail. Somehow I do not see any projected use of the St. Albert trail promenades that would suggest it will rival resident use of  the Red Willow Trail network. Somewhere council’s grasp of resident needs has been overtaken by zealous project designers keen on supplanting the Sturgeon River valley and natural areas with the hardened landscape of St. Albert Trail. No amount of overplanting will make the promenades a must go-to area for residents seeking fresh air and peaceful tranquility.  Residents have shown they value accessible green space. Council needs to get ahead of a growing community and invest in expanding the Red Willow Trail network in Oakmont and Riverside.
