This column by John Liston is dead on and The Gazette and other papers like yours do a great public service.
Not everyone is connected by Facebook or Twitter, and as far as St. Albert council is concerned didn’t most of them run on the basis of fewer in-camera meetings and more open communication?
It seems this council has fallen by the wayside, with budget deliberations and all kept secret; an eight-per-cent tax hike and no discussion until it is way too late.
The people of St. Albert seem happy that they are kept in the dark, but this column is true, if the fourth estate is kept out of the loop, democracy will fail us on so many levels. The accountability of this council and future councils is to be open and forthright as the oath they took when they were elected.
Keep up the good work on reporting all that happens in St. Albert and surrounding area, as the service you provide is invaluable as a homeowner, taxpayer, and concerned citizen of St. Albert.
