Like everyone else, I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Joey Moss; an important icon and ambassador for the City of Edmonton and Province of Alberta. It has been heartwarming to hear all of the tributes pouring in for such a deserving individual. A lot of discussion is taking place on how best to honor his legacy; whether it be through monetary donations to the Winnifred Stewart Association or online petition to rename Edmonton’s Downtown Community Arena. All suggestions are worthy to be considered.
The biggest legacy to Joey, in my opinion, would be for employers to follow the Oilers organization’s lead and consider hiring individuals with developmental disabilities. Although it might take more time at the onset to train and become familiar with their learning style, the employer is likely to gain and benefit overall from a loyal, dedicated and long-term employee. Patience, understanding, and acceptance can lead to great advantages and benefits to that organization.
As a mother of a teenage son who has difficulty communicating with others due to high levels of anxiety, my hope for him is that he will find an employer who will put in the time to get to know him and to see all the potential there. Joey has demonstrated that people with developmental disabilities are very special and can contribute significantly to the betterment of society.
