Blowing snow driven by wind gusts of 80 km/h and higher is causing dangerous driving conditions in St. Albert and across central Alberta.
At 6:18 p.m. Tuesday the RCMP warned of “extremely poor driving conditions” around Edmonton and in Leduc, Wetaskiwin, Camrose County, Maskwacis and Ponoka and areas around Edmonton.
“Visibility is extremely poor in many locations,” the RCMP said, adding officers are responding to multiple collisions and rollovers along Highway 2 between Leduc and Red Deer.
Environment Canada issued a blowing snow advisory earlier in the day.
“Winds gusting up to 80 km/h, combined with snow at times will reduce visibility in blowing snow,” it reads. “Conditions will improve overnight. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.
“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”
The snowy conditions will persist into the overnight with the 100 per cent chance of flurries diminishing to 60 per cent at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.
