The wind chill could make it feel as cold as -45 in St. Albert Saturday night.
Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning at 3:35 p.m. for Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park.
The base temperature will drop toward -28 C overnight into Monday morning with the wind chill factor creating dangerous conditions.
“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” the alert reads. “Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”
Wind chill values will moderate by Monday afternoon, according to ECCC.
Monday is expected to be sunny with a high of -15 C. The wind will make it feel more like -39 in the morning and -21 in the afternoon.
There will be a 60 per cent chance of flurries overnight to Tuesday, which is expected to see a mix of sun and cloud and a high of -17 C.
