People tend to garden for many reasons: to enhance the beauty of their lot, to provide places to sit and relax, to provide a play place or places for children, and to grow food.

I have just read Jessica Nelson’s piece (Gazette October 12) re new Premier Danielle Smith’s healthcare comments re health care spending.

Nobody said politics made too much sense. Sometimes it’s downright weird. OK, so Jason Kenney gets 51.4 per cent party support in a leadership review last May and subsequently steps down as Alberta premier.

There’s been renewed talk about the role the monarchy plays in Canada with the recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Some people have called for abolishing it and cutting our last formal ties with Great Britain.

So, what did you do this weekend? Like most of us you were either preparing for winter or in southern Alberta, battening down the hatches for the first snowfall of the year. Making Halloween costumes for kids or buying your pumpkin.

I am a St Albert library user. I pay my taxes, I do not have children going to school here but my taxes pay for schools. I do not use the baseball diamonds, I am not able to play soccer, or hockey.

I would like to shout out a big thank you to members of the U13 AA Raider Stars hockey team. I was pleasantly surprised when a couple members of the team rang my doorbell last Friday and offered to rake the leaves from my front yard.

On behalf of the St. Albert Public Library Board (SAPL), we thank the many community members who have taken time to contact city council to ask that they not proceed with a devastating cut to library funding.

I feel that cutting library funding is so short-sighted. Libraries are so much more than books.

'Now more than ever, the city must sharpen its pencils, and be even more intentional, integrated, and thoughtful about its plans and development visions — and implement them with sharp co-ordination.'
