Regarding Chris Nelson's commentary on COVID-19 ("Another Doubting Thomas moment," Oct. 28 Gazette):
Many years ago, drinking water was distributed in lead pipes. After a long while, the experts found that lead was hazardous to health. In the 1900s, cast iron pipe with lead and oakum joints was common. After a while, even this small amount of lead was considered hazardous to health. Then came asbestos cement pipe, the most inert, long lasting pipe ever. Then came the realization that asbestos is also hazardous to health. Now we are into plastic pipe. According to Chris Nelson, why should we trust the engineering experts because they made so many mistakes!Well, just as we in the engineering world learned from our mistakes, so too do the COVID-19 experts and politicians. The problem is balancing the negative impact on both health and the economy. Each step into the unknown leads to, at times, an unexpected consequence. Step by step, they are learning.
The real problem is that we have many people that do not care about their responsibilities to their family, friends, and others. Please wear your masks, social distance and remain in your small cohort groups. So far, there have been 313 deaths in Alberta. Do you want to be responsible for another? I do not!
