It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Thérèse (Terry) Trottier on December 8, 2022 at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Léon Trottier, and is survived by her sister Yvette (Edward) MacCallum, by her children Maurice (Renee), Cécile (Robert), Bernard (Susan) and Laurent (Jihan), by her 11 grandchildren and by her 4 great-grandchildren.

Terry was born on December 23, 1935, in St. Paul, Alberta, the 7th of 9 children of Émile and Cécile Roy (née Lajoie.) Terry grew up in a loving family who did what they could to make ends meet and take care of each other. From a young age Terry displayed creative flair in painting, drawing and sculpture. In 1958, she married Léon in St. Paul, and she continued her artistic endeavours while raising a family and staying actively involved in the community through volunteering and sharing her time and talents. Recurring themes in her artwork were northern Alberta landscapes as well as the elderly, finding that each elder had a story to tell and knowledge to pass on to the next generation. She displayed and sold her art from her home studio and in exhibitions around Alberta.

In her upbringing Terry learned to be resourceful and she maintained habits of economy throughout her life. She would make the most of nature’s bounty, growing a garden and picking berries according to the season, with plenty of baking and home-cooked meals to share with family and friends. She came to love fishing (especially ice-fishing) on various lakes in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. She and her friends knew the value of a good swap and between them they would exchange loaves of bread, tourtière, perogies, pies and anything else where making extra for others was the norm.

She loved a good laugh and made many friends. She remembered the good times at the cottage at Horseshoe Bay on St. Vincent Lake as well as the warm winters with new (and old) friends in Arizona. Later in life, Terry and Léon moved to St. Albert, Alberta; there “Mémère” was close to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren for whom she would always have many home-baked treats. She lived fully and independently until her final days. She will be greatly missed.

A private celebration of life will be held at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LoSeCa Foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of persons with disabilities.
