Peacefully and surrounded by his children, Bernie passed away on Sunday, September 24th , 2023 at the age of 82 years.
Bernie is survived by his partner Madeline Thornton; his 3 children, Paul (Toni), Nicole (Shane De Lorey), and Danielle (Chris Ziolkowski); his beloved grandchildren, Caitlin, Carter, Lachlan, Peyton, Teagan, and Rowan; his siblings, Val (Jewel) Merchant, Jim (Sharon) Merchant, Marianne (Ken) Lysenko; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving sister and brother-in-law Mona and Ken Cush.
Bernie will be sadly missed for his gentle soul, his calm, patient demeanor, his lifelong dedication to education, his Catholic faith and most of all, his devotion to his family.
Bernie was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and received numerous degrees and certifications within the Education and Theology disciplines. He was especially proud of his time as the first principal at St. Benedict’s School in Leduc, Alberta from 1983 to 2000. Bernie was fortunate to have pursued many travelling adventures after his retirement.
Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October
3rd, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 10826-62 Avenue, Edmonton.
