December 1, 1934 – April 6, 2023

On April 6, 2023, the world lost an incredible man.  And the world of those who knew and loved him will never be the same.  Donald “Don” Mattern was a character of the most captivating kind - salt of the earth, unpretentious, quick-witted, unwaveringly loyal.  He possessed a remarkable combination of street smarts, charm, a strong work ethic, and an amazing sense of humour.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Don was fresh from high school when he began an apprenticeship at Bulman Brothers, a thriving printing company in the region. His dedication and talent were quickly recognized, shooting him to the position of foreman at a young age.  It was along this trajectory – advancing into ever more senior positions – that Don’s career in printing continued until his bittersweet retirement at 65.

In 1957, Donald married his first love, Jeannie.  By 1972, their family had grown to include four boys and the couple schlepped them all west, starting afresh in St. Albert.  When Jeannie fell ill, Don spent years as both caregiver and provider, dividing his time between managing a printing plant, helping Jeannie, and looking after their sons and household. He made it look easy and never complained.

After Jeannie's passing in 2005, Donald found love again (a beautiful thing to be twitterpated anew in your 70s!) and married Isabelle Bordage on New Year's Day in 2011. Their life together included much laughter, lively debates, shared travels, and (after a move to Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island) many rounds of golf in all seasons.  The two were crazy about each other and their shared devotion was an inspiration to us all.

Family meant everything to Don; there was nothing he loved more than all of us gathered together, committed to staying a while.

His absence is deeply felt by all who knew him but most especially his beautiful wife Isabelle; his children: Darryl (Loretta), Jeff (Carrie), and Glenn (Christine); Isabelle’s children: Tanya, Meredith and Kyle Bordage; his six grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren and three nephews.  Don was predeceased by Jeannie, his loving wife of 48 years, son Greg, and sister Dorothy Holland.

Friends and family are invited to the celebration of Don's life between 2 and 5 pm on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at his son’s residence: 76 Sunset Blvd., St. Albert, Alberta.
