1937-2023

Nancy Evelyn Mancell, known to most as “Nana”, of St. Albert, Alberta, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 23rd, 2023.

Nancy was born on October 10th, 1937 in Lac La Nonne, Alberta. Her parents, Margaret and Joseph L’Hirondelle had eight children: Josephine, Florence, Edna, Juliette, Margaret, William, and Louis. Nancy was the youngest of the family. She loved growing up on the farm, spending her time outside, climbing trees, swimming in the river, and playing with her siblings.

Nancy met her husband Gerry and loved him deeply. They were married on June 16th, 1956 in Drumheller, Alberta. Together they had four children: Tracey, Wayne, Shelley, and Brett. They traveled throughout Alberta and British Columbia while their children were growing up. In 1970, they built a beautiful home in Fairhaven, just outside of Villeneuve, and Nancy lived there until March 2021. The home is still a very special place for her family. She loved to go for long walks, play bridge weekly with her friends, cook delicious meals, and go camping with her family.

Nancy was an incredible Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Auntie, cousin, and friend. She spent most of her adult life as what she calls a Domestic Engineer. She took care of her four children, her husband, Gerry, and later in life, her five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. To these children, she was known as Nana and she was the best Nana they ever could have asked for.

Everyone who knew Nancy loved her. She was outgoing, kind, and always knew how to have a good time. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, compassion and generosity, for always answering the phone to chat, and for making the most delicious perogies, cinnamon buns, cabbage rolls, and pie imaginable.

Nancy is survived by her children, Tracey Wiersema (John), Shelley Hodgson (Wayne), and Brett Mancell (Cheryl); grandchildren, Christopher Bosiak (Kathleen), Aaron Bosiak (Yvonne), Ashlee Lennox (Rob), Tara Hodgson (Adrian), and Melissa Hodgson (James); as well as her beloved great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her son, Wayne; and her parents, and siblings.

Her family takes great comfort in knowing that Nancy is now reunited with so many that she loved and has found peace and rest.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, May 27th, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Church and Community Centre, 165 Liberton Drive, St. Albert. All who knew and loved Nancy are welcome to join in celebrating and remembering all that Nancy was.
