After retiring from the military in 2007, Murray began a career in the water treatment industry where he was currently employed at the E.L Smith water treatment plant in Edmonton. Murray had an extreme passion for the outdoors, especially his annual hunting trips with his boys and the crew (legendary stories), fishing with his dad in the Kootenays or Slave Lake or just camping with family and friends, where he was known for his amazing barbecue steaks. Murray enjoyed playing numerous sports earning his nickname Magic in volleyball and Brigade Champion in javelin in Lahr, Germany. He also loved cheering on his favorite hockey team The Habs, with the Oilers being a close second.

Murray was a proud dad to his two sons: Zayne (Hailey) and Zachery Johnson. Murray was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion 271, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles St. Albert aerie 2102.
