1929 ~ 2024

Werner Helten passed away on Thursday, September 5 th, 2024 at the age of 95. He was one of five sons born to Christian Joseph and Maria Elisabeth Helten in Koln, Germany on May 24, 1929.

He trained as a decorator and painter in Germany and utilized this trade as a career when he immigrated to Canada  in 1954. While in Edmonton, Werner decided to take English classes where he met Inge. Together they raised four children: Peter (Verna), Karen (Chuck), Peggy (Dennis), Patty (Peter); and had 14 grandchildren: Nicole, Jason, Nadine, James, Lindsay, Ashley, Shaun, Jennifer, Jessica, Jessy, Samantha, Dennie, Jakob and Klara; 10 great-grandchildren: Hannah, Landon, Jocelyn, Ethan, Michael, Nox, Calyx, Maxx, Hassin and Evelyn; and two great-great-grandchildren: Chance and Bowen. Werner and Inge were married for 68 years.

Werner lost the love of his life, Inge, 10 months ago, but was fortunate to have made a lifetime of memories with her.

Werner’s favourite thing to do in life was travel. His love for traveling was infectious. He went back to Germany with his family many times, as well as other parts of Europe. After Werner and Inge retired, they loved to travel all over North America in their Volkswagen camper. He loved spending time with his family, relatives and friends. Everyone was always welcome.

“Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived.”

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the staff at Benevolence Care Centre in Edmonton and to Liam for their care and compassion for Werner during his time with them.

A Celebration of Life is being held on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at 12:00 pm in the Grandin Room at the St. Albert Inn. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
