Patrick James Glenn lived a good life, and while some may feel that 85 years is long, it still wasn’t enough for us. Patrick Glenn was born on October 16, 1937 in Spirit River, Alberta to James and Etta Glenn nee Welch. He is predeceased by his siblings Bill (Elsie) Hakes, Dennis (Edith) Hakes, Rebecca May (Bubbins) Glenn, and Mary (Bill) Kirkham, as well as his younger sibling Clarence Glenn, and survived by his youngest brother, Robert “Joe” (Hedy) Glenn.
Patrick Glenn was a devoted family man. He married his sweetheart, Adoline Dreger, on Dec 23, 1960, and together, they created a warm and loving home.He was a loving father to two boys: Cary Glenn and Brad (Sarah) Glenn, and a proud grandfather to three grandchildren, Gaelan Glenn, Dacotah (Robynne) Glenn, and Willow (Elissa) Chapman-Glenn, who brought immense joy to his life. Pat's role as a father and grandfather was marked by his unwavering support, wisdom, and unconditional love. He was also welcomed warmly into Adoline’s family of her mother Emily Dreger, Hilda (Jerry) Dika, Hattie (Dave) Close, Lloyd (Winnie) Dreger, Gus (Thelma) Dreger, Esther (Terry) Vangergaag, and Aaron (Olga) Dreger. He will be missed by his multitude of nieces and nephews, who loved and respected him immensely.
He enjoyed the start of his life in the backwoods near Spirit River, riding a horse to the one-room schoolhouse he attended, later moving closer to town and using a team and buggie to get to the more modern school, occasionally boarding with families so he could get his education. He delivered groceries for the Co-Op for pocket money, riding a bicycle up the steep hills of Spirit River. Sports played a great role in these growing years as he won many competitions, playing ‘scrub’ to baseball, track and field, hockey, curling, and bowling. Even into his senior years he continued playing as much as he could, remaining close friends with all his teammates.
Patrick's commitment to his students was unwavering, and he dedicated decades of his life to teaching, most notably 26 years teaching at St. Albert High School, where he touched the lives of countless students who fondly remember him as an inspirational mentor.
One trait that Pat had was that no matter where he went, he knew someone. Whether it be running into students, parents, sports team members, or family, wherever he went he’d reunite with friends. He even recognized his grade three teacher on the beaches in Hawaii.
Pat Glenn's life was a testament to the values of love, kindness, and education. He leaves behind a legacy of inspired students, grateful family members, and friends who will forever remember his warm smile, gentle spirit, and support. Though he may have left this world, his memory and influence will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service to celebrate Pat Glenn's life will be held at 2:00 on September 29, 2023 at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Chapel at 9 Muir Drive, the corner of St. Vital Avenue & St. Albert Trail. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
