With love and admiration, we announce the passing of Evelyn Hazel Ferguson (nee Speer) on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 89 years.

Born January 20th, 1935, in a farmhouse south of Gibbons, Evelyn was active and independent in her youth. Speed-skating and bowling were great pastimes, but her favourite was baseball, at one time pitching for 3 Edmonton city teams, in different leagues. She liked to recall a particular game where her team, dressed simply in t-shirts, upset the Senior Women’s champions, who were decked out in proper uniforms. Perhaps this was the start of her championing the underdog.

Evelyn married Tom Ferguson in 1952, moving to St. Albert in 1960 to raise their family of five. As a young mother, Ev was active in the community, helping organize various activities for local kids, such as having them bussed to the Edmonton YMCA for swim lessons. Evelyn started working full time in 1964 at Armstrong Lawrence Auctions and later employment included CFRN, and the St. Albert school board. She went on to earn her real estate license and become a Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. As a senior, Evelyn was active with the St. Albert Seniors center, participating in the floor curling program and organizing at home bonspiels.

Evelyn was predeceased by her mom and dad, Ken and Hazel (nee Wold) Speer, brother Eldwin (Omie) Speer, husband Thomas Ferguson (1999), grandson Brent Ferguson (2012) son-in-law Myles Tymchyshyn (2017) and her companion Ron Noonan (2020).

Ev’s memory will be kept alive by her children Terri (Kirby), Doug (Brenda), Lorri (Scott), Gary (Brenda), Brian (Lisa), her 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was treated with warmth and dignity as she lived out the last few years of her life and the family is deeply grateful to the staff at Venta Care Centre for their tender and professional care.

A Celebration of Evelyn’s life will be organized for this Fall.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Sturgeon Memorial Funeral Chapel (780) 921-3900
