October 21, 1936 - December 23, 2023

Alan passed away peacefully, in his 88th year, surrounded by loved ones. He is reunited with his wife of 63 years, Betty, who predeceased him in 2022, as well as his son, Greg, and brother, Jim.

He will be lovingly remembered by his three children: Shelley (Bill), Lee (Cheryl), Patti (Barry). He will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren: Taryn, Devon, Kelsey, Stephanie, Jared; and his great- grandchild, Hayden; and by his extended family: Ian (Laura), John, Kendra, Kara, Danielle (Zane), Aurora, Maeve, Elise, Violet. In addition he will be fondly remembered by his sister, Muriel; brothers: Ray (Marg) and Bruce; sisters-in-law: Joan, and Terry Ann (Ed); as well as by a large number of cousins, nieces, nephews and a network of friends.

Alan was born in Bezanson, which is where he met his wife and started his family working as a surveyor/ assessor. He moved the family to St. Albert in 1971 to further his assessment career. He retired from Municipal Affairs as an assessment inspector in 1994, but served on the provincial appeal board until 2004.

His greatest career achievement was starting his own company, Fenton Associates, 35 years ago, wherein he was instrumental in setting up a tax program for First Nation Bands. Alan continued to be active in his business up until the week before his death when he officially retired. Members of the First Nation Tax Commission wrote that they “will miss his sage advice, expertise, insights on policy and his tireless advocacy.” Dad was very happy and proud that his three children will carry on his business and legacy.

Alan’s hobbies were playing ball (going to the slopitch nationals many times), curling, and golf. He loved to spend time at the family cabin in the Shuswap, sitting on the deck planning his next projects, watering his trees and spending time with family and friends.

He had a large network of friends from his ball teams, working life and curling. His coffee companions will miss his stories and quiet laugh. He was kind, considerate, pragmatic and had a wonderful dry wit. Dad told us he wants people who knew him “to remember all the good times we had and thanks you for the company over the years.”

Alan enjoyed a living Celebration of Life on his 87th birthday with over 70 people in attendance. There will be a family graveside service in Bezanson in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Cross Cancer Institute or to the ALS society (www.alsab.ca) on behalf of his daughter Patti.
