Ada Curial of St. Albert, Alberta passed away after a brief illness, at the age of 99.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Gaston Curial. She leaves to mourn her loss, her five children: Marie-Blanche (MB) Mitchell, Michelle Curial-Hebert (André), Elyse Curial (Peter), Jocelyne Kettner (Ken), and Marc Curial; eight grandchildren: Michael Reeves (Christine), Melissa Martinig (Chad), Scott Mitchell (Nicole), Dylan Reeves (Ashley), Amanda Selig (Allen), Olivia Selig (Russell), Zach Kettner and Levi Kettner; great-grandchildren: Kate and Max, Ridley and Primm, Madeleine and Camilla, Benjamin and Elliott; cousins Céline Dery and Pat Dery; numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

Ada joins her biological parents Thomas and Frances (May) Yonge Carey, her adoptive parents Zéphirin and Maria Allard, and siblings Iona Sheehan, Woodrow Carey, Patrick (Darlene) Carey, Elise/Alice Remi (George).

Ada was born in Central Butte, Saskatchewan. Ada’s mother passed away when she was only two years old, leaving her father with six children he could not care for. All were adopted by various families. Ada was welcomed by a childless French-Canadian couple, Maria and Zéphirin Allard who were wonderful parents to Ada and raised her on a farm near Cold Lake, Alberta. Ada became a schoolteacher and taught for all her adult life.  She met Gaston in Cold Lake and they married in 1955.

Ada and Gaston were very involved in their son Marc’s life, who was born with Down Syndrome. They were instrumental in co-founding LoSeCa Foundation with other thoughtful parents to care for the unique needs of people with developmental disabilities. Ada also assisted in the creation of one of LoSeCa’s major sources of funding, the I'm Unique thrift shop.

Ada lived independently until the age of 97, when her home was destroyed in a devastating fire. She read two newspapers daily and avidly followed world news and current events. She was also the family historian who loved to recount stories and write poetry.

A prayer service will be held on Tuesday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Albert Catholic Parish, 7 St. Vital Avenue, St. Albert, followed by interment at St. Albert Parish Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff in the Emergency department of Sturgeon Community Hospital,  Dr. Allan McDonald and the caring team of Unit 15; as well as the staff at Chartwell St. Albert. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to LoSeCa Foundation.

The fringe of darkened pine,

My steps would seek, more slowly now,

A resting place to find.” – A.M. Curial
