Marjorie Cowie passed away peacefully on April 19, 2025, at the age of 95, in St. Albert, Alberta.

A proud Saskatchewan girl, she was born in Kerrobert and raised in Saskatoon. The youngest of seven children born to Helma and William H. Hellofs, she was raised in a busy household that also included a grandparent and cousin.

As a child she loved cats and sports and roller skating. Girls she met in grade one remained her friends for life. As a teen, she was a bobby-soxer swooning over Frank Sinatra. Her style changed, but Sinatra was a constant.

After graduating from City Park Collegiate, she trained as a secretary. She enjoyed concerts and dancing and was president of her sorority. She met James Cowie of Winnipeg on a blind date, and the rest, as they say, is history. Marj and Jim married in Saskatoon in 1954, then moved to Edmonton, where their two daughters were born.

Marjorie enjoyed travel, and she saw the world, but her favourite place was her kitchen at home.  Throughout her life, she loved to cook and bake and entertain. Asked the secret of her longevity, she typically answered espresso coffee and red wine. Until the end, she loved shopping and restaurants and cafés.

Children held a special place in her heart, and she was affectionately known as ‘Grandma Marjorie’. She was also known as ‘Coach M’ for her many opinions about the Oilers.

She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and husband of 52 years, Jim. She is survived by her adoring daughters Lesle and Dawn and sons-in-law Brent and David. Also by nieces and nephews across North America, and her many friends both near and far.

Marjorie was charitable, hospitable, and funny, and her legacy is one of love, laughter, and generosity. She lived her life with a kindness that touched everyone she met.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
