December 6, 1950 - October 1, 2019
In the early evening of October 1, 2019 Charlotte passed away in the ICU at VGH surrounded by the love of family and friends. Missing her more than tongue can tell is her daughter Sarah, and her siblings Gregory (Josh and Elysia) and Theo as well as an 8 year old golden retriever named Ginny. Also grieving are the Powell family Rob, Janet, Mark (Susan) and Ross (Nancy, Brenden and Skyler) as well as numerous friends and colleagues in both Alberta and Vancouver.
Born in Vancouver, Charlotte knew early on she wanted to be a physiotherapist and she accomplished that goal graduating with a degree in Rehabilitation Medicine from UBC. Charlotte worked at both G. F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre, and UBC Health Sciences before relocating to Alberta, where she worked at both the Royal Alex Hospital and subsequently the University of Alberta hospital where she was Physical Therapy Coord. - Neurosciences for many years.
In addition be being a talented and compassionate physiotherapist, Charlotte as a consummate gardener, brilliant cook and baker, an avid reader of mystery books and was never known to decline the offer of a G&T. She had recently taken up Tai Chi and was on a mission to master the art of making sourdough bread. Charlotte had a life-long love affair with Pender Island and a trip to the coast was rarely without a side-trip to her beloved island.
When singling out individuals there is always the chance someone will be missed; however we would be remiss without mentioning Dr. Joy Russell for helping Sarah during Charlotte’s admission through the ER, and the whole care team in the ICU who treated her with such dignity. Holding the fort in Alberta we thank Lin & Lloyd and Janice & Doug and in Vancouver; Carole, Donna & Al, Wanda & Fred, Lorraine & Emile, and Linda & Martin. There will be no service; however, if you are able a donation in her name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada would be appreciated. And, if you haven’t already done so, take the lead from Charlotte - sign your organ donor card, prepare your advance directives and make sure your family knows your wishes.
