1947 – 2023

It is with deep sadness the family and friends of Elana Hope Aaserud of St. Albert, AB, announces her passing on October 6, 2023, at 76 years old. She was a beloved partner to Dean McKenzie (predeceased), devoted mother to son Graeme A. Aaserud and daughter Kara J. Aaserud, as well as to numerous rescue dogs and cats, and a proud grandmother to Everleigh and Asher.

The only child of Elias and Anna Podealuk (nee Hanasik), Elana lived in several towns in eastern Alberta before settling in Edmonton at the age of 12. There, she attended Parkview Junior High, Ross Sheppard High School, and the University of Alberta where she earned a degree in Education.

Elana went on to become a passionate teacher and coach. Whether it was in biology, physEd, downhill skiing, fastball, or dog agility, she got great pleasure in witnessing the “A-Ha” moments of others. She loved ancient history, the colour “beaten egg yolk yellow,” crisp mountain air and adventures on her motorcycle. Her secret wish was to be an astronaut.

When Elana underwent surgery for an aortic aneurism at 65, she was left without the ability to walk. Yet, she continued to pursue many of her passions with grit and determination. She was a tough lady who wore her battle scars with pride. Later in life, she was grateful for the many friends she made through the St. Albert Seniors Association.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton (https://www.wildlife-edm.ca).
