Dog lovers don’t need an excuse to get out and have fun with their furry friends, but in Morinville May 26 they’ll have a great reason anyway: the annual Purina Walk for Dog Guides.
Organized by the Morinville Lions Club, the event is not only a great chance to get active with your canine, but also a great way to raise funds for a very worthy cause as dog-walkers collect pledges for the event.
“Lions Foundation of Canada is a unique organization that trains dog guides in six distinct programs to help Canadians with disabilities,” stated Morinville Lions Club spokesperson Deborah Robillard.
“The Purina Walk for Dog Guides helps provide the essential funding needed to allow the Lions Foundation to continue to provide dog guides at no cost to people with disabilities each year.”
Robillard noted that guide dogs are expensive. Each requires training with a price tag around $20,000. Since the dogs are provided gratis to disabled Canadians, fundraising like the dog walk is crucial.
The event will include a five-kilometre charity walk around the Morinville town trails.
“We will be using the Fish & Game Association building as our start and finish points, with activities starting at 8 a.m.,” said Robillard.
She noted registrations will begin at 8 a.m., and the walk will commence at 10 a.m.
Robillard stated free refreshments will be provided all day, with tea, coffee, donuts, and fruit juice in the morning, and BBQ hot dogs and beverages for lunch.
She also noted that the Lions are glad to welcome more sponsors for the event.
All proceeds from the event go toward training dog guides. More information about the event is available by calling Robillard at 780-224-2700.
