Help St. Albert welcome Special Olympics athletes and their families from across Canada from Feb. 28 to March 3, 2012. Many volunteers are needed to help make the Games a success, with both long-term and short-term opportunities available. Choose from a wide variety of roles in areas such as the sports, medical services, scoring and results, media and marketing, transportation, security, administration, registration, accreditation, special events and more. Be a part of the excitement of a national Games experience in our city. Cheer these athletes on as they are Just as Bold! Here for Gold!
Be a part of the Harvest Festival celebrations at the St. Albert Grain Elevator Park and enjoy this wrap up event to the summer season. Help as event support greeting visitors, encouraging participation in games and activities and helping to direct foot traffic to the many activities. Event takes place the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 18.
Are you comfortable around horses and are you interested in helping people with disabilities to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of recreational horseback riding? In an hour-long class, a horse handler will lead a horse while the rider participates in the class. The side walker will walk alongside the horse and lend physical and/or emotional support to the rider during the lesson. Volunteers can also help in the barn, before and after class, grooming and tacking horses. Positions are available at Edmonton and the new St. Albert location; the fall session runs from the beginning of September to the end of November. Experience with horses or people with disabilities not required; minimum age is 14 years of age.
Help to keep the good work and memory of Terry Fox alive, and volunteer at this annual volunteer-led event on Sunday, Sept. 18. Assist with registration, pledge table, course monitoring, or setup/takedown.
Help this organization at their annual walk, Sunday, Sept. 18, at Churchill Square in Edmonton. Volunteer for various positions including registration, security, count room, water stations, photographers, walk route marshals, signage on site and along routes and cleanup. This organization is also looking for volunteers to help in the weeks prior to the event.
Would you like to become involved in and make a difference to the cancer community? Volunteer at the Cross Cancer Institute, a lead centre for province-wide prevention, research and treatment programs. There are more than 25 diverse volunteer programs to choose from and many four-hour shifts are available Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
