Two charged in fatal collision

Two men have been charged in relation to a fatal vehicle collision on St. Albert Trail that claimed the life of one man earlier this year.

Jacques Raymond Hachey, 22, of St. Albert has been charged with impaired operation by drug of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation by drug of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, possession of marijuana under 30 grams and making an unsafe left turn.

Salman Akram, 27, of Edmonton has been charged with operating a vehicle at an unreasonable rate of speed and possession of marijuana under 30 grams.

The two-vehicle collision occurred on the evening of Feb. 23 at St. Albert Trail and Hebert Road. A Chevrolet Suburban travelling southbound on St. Albert Trail was turning left onto Hebert Road when it collided with an Acura sedan travelling north on St. Albert Trail.

As a result, the driver of the Acura struck a light pole on the broadside of the passenger door. St. Albert resident Michael Loft-McLean, 20, was sitting in the front passenger seat and was killed on impact.

The men charged are the two drivers involved in the collision.

Hachey is scheduled to appear in St. Albert court on July 29. Akram is scheduled to appear on Aug. 12.
