Quick! Start digging through that old box of memorabilia. Get into your attic and rummage through that stash of collectibles that you scrounged together when you were a kid. Where did you leave that bauble, that old baseball card, that funny painting?
Yesterday, the Treasure Hunters Roadshow rolled into town to give local residents a glimmer of hope that all of those old, forgotten trinkets are not just precious antiques; they might be worth big money.
“Our event is extremely unique,” began Matthew Enright, vice president of media relations for THR & Associates, the American production company behind the show. “We travel around the globe looking for rare collectibles.”
“It gives people the opportunity to go through their attic, go through their closet. Everybody can think of something in their household that may have been passed down from their parents or grandparents – or maybe that they own themselves – that they’re curious to find out about.”
Organizers expect more than 1,000 people to attend the event, some with dollar signs in their eyes while many others are just interested in knowing if there is any value associated with their prized possessions. Either way, they can talk with antique and collectible experts who can conduct on-the-spot appraisals. They can even offer payment on the spot for those willing to sell.
According to their news release, they are interested in gold because of the high price of that precious metal. They’re so keen on buying gold that they even want people to scrounge through their old teeth and dig out the gold fillings. They promise to pay for it based on the commodity’s current value.
They’re also hoping that people will bring in money issued before 1965, toys, dolls, trains, vintage and costume jewellery (especially if it’s made out of gold or silver), musical instruments, advertising and war memorabilia, swords, knives, daggers, and anything unusual.
The Treasure Hunters Roadshow will be open at 9 a.m. each morning until Saturday, closing at 6 p.m. each day except at 4 p.m. on the last day. It is set up at the Best Western Plus hotel located at 460 St. Albert Trail.
Admission is free.
