Sturgeon County CAO resigns

There will be more change at the top in Sturgeon County, with the resignation of chief administrative officer Chris Micek.

There will be more change at the top in Sturgeon County, with the resignation of chief administrative officer Chris Micek.

The county announced Micek’s departure minutes before the Gazette’s press deadline yesterday afternoon with a brief statement saying that council had accepted his resignation and that Ian Mckay would serve in an acting capacity in the interim.

In an emailed statement, Mayor Donald Rigney thanked Micek for his service to the county and said he would be missed.

“Chris moved the organization in a new direction during his three years at the helm,” Rigney said. “His vision and leadership will be missed not only in our council chambers, but across the region as well.”

Council had to vote to accept Micek’s resignation and Rigney said that vote was not unanimous.

He said councillors Don McGeachy and Dave Kluthe both opposed accepting Micek’s letter.

Rigney said while he was deeply sorry to see Micek go, he felt it resolved some outstanding issues and concerns.

Rigney said he hoped that some of the outstanding issues could be resolved through mediation, but when he made that suggestion it was clear there was not a majority support for that on council.

Coun. Ken McGillis also said it was unfortunate, but was hopeful that new leadership would bring the county some success.

“I am sorry that he decided to go, but maybe it was a change that we had some new leadership.”

Council met Tuesday for over three hours in a special in camera session. They were set to deal with a personnel issue, but the Gazette was unable to confirm whether Micek was the topic of conversation.
