A Strathcona County RCMP officer died in a motor vehicle accident at 2 a.m. this morning after hitting a concrete barrier.

Despite efforts of emergency responders and the bystanders present, Const. Harvinder Singh Dhami succumbed to his injuries. The incident is still under investigation, the RCMP said in a press release, and more information may be provided when available.

The crash happened on Township Road 540, near the northeast edge of Edmonton. RCMP were on scene investigating where the road turns into a dead end near the North Saskatchewan River.

During a press conference in Sherwood park on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki said Dhami was responding to a noise complaint call and hit a concrete barrier while driving.

An RCMP release said Dhami joined the RCMP in 2019 and was posted to the Strathcona Municipal detachment.  Dhami was known to be a team member who was compassionate, caring and very community oriented.

“Losing a member of our police service and a member of the community is incredibly difficult,” said Zablocki.

“We are very appreciative of the support that has been extended to the family, our staff and the community.”

This is the second time in one month that regional officers have been killed on the job. On Thursday March 16 two Edmonton Police officers were shot and killed in the line of duty. Const. Brett Ryan, 30, with 5.5 years of service and Const. Travis Jordan, 35, with 8.5 years of service were killed in the line of duty in the incident.
