St. Albert’s mayor will help this city’s seniors centre kick off its 50th anniversary next week at the launch of a free expo.
St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron is scheduled to proclaim June 2–8 as Seniors’ Week in this city at the launch of the St. Albert Seniors Association’s Golden Expo on June 3. The expo is one of a long list of free events happening in town for Seniors’ Week.
Expo organizer Tanya Hamilton said the association decided to hold its first-ever Golden Expo this year to mark its 50th anniversary.
“Seniors’ Week is obviously really big for us, and the 50th anniversary is also really big for us,” she said.
The Golden Expo runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3 and features free talks on fraud prevention, healthy eating, and other subjects, the city’s Seniors’ Week guide shows. Hamilton said there will also be a vendor’s hall, door prizes, and CFCW Radio, which will be broadcasting live on location. She hoped to see about 500 people come out to the event.
June 5 will see the association host a “choose your own adventure” forum, where guests can enrol in up to five classes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Hamilton continued. Topics covered include pickleball, woodworking, rock painting, floor curling, and sewing a traditional African blouse, the latter of which will be taught by the African and African Descendants Friendship Club of St. Albert. Guests will have to pay for the woodworking class (where they will make a birdhouse) but can enjoy the others for free.
Other Seniors’ Week activities include a free screening of Robert De Niro’s The Alto Knights at the Royal Canadian Legion hall on June 2, the unveiling of the St. Albert Hugs and Stitches group’s intergenerational quilt at St. Albert Place on June 4, and the inaugural Seniors Service Awards on June 6.
