St. Albert girls group carries over 450 kg of donations to food bank

Fit+Fierce members fill their backpacks to support community non-profit

Approximately 100 girls walked from Fowler Athletic Park to the St. Albert Food Bank and Community Village on May 22, carrying backpacks filled with food.

The walk was organized by Fit+Fierce, a local group for girls in Grades 3-12, which focuses on fitness, nutrition and mindset.

"We are a wellness program for girls or fitness mindset nutrition, and one of our other pillars is contribution and community," said Kelsey Vickers, a personal trainer and co-owner of Fit+Fierce. "So we wanted to align with an organization that was like a not-for-profit, something that was giving back to the community."

Vickers said supporting the food bank was a good fit, as they wanted to give back to the community using nutrition.

In total, people carried 457 kilograms of food to the food bank, an approximately two-kilometre walk from Fowler Athletic Park.

"On this night, and any of our give back to the community nights, all the girls come together, and we've asked them to really, kind of challenge themselves, I guess you'd say, to bring as many people as they could, so that we can make a bigger impact for the food bank," said Vickers.

Vickers said this is the eighth year they have done the walk, and next year, they are hoping to make it even bigger.

"It's our last donation [of the year]," said Vickers. "So we just make a great night out of it. It's just an opportunity for us to really show the girls that giving back to the community matters."
