The city of St. Albert is receiving nearly $12 million in federal funding for housing.

On March 21, the Government of Canada announced it would be providing the city with $11.8 million in funding through Round Two of the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) grant program administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), a news release said.

"On behalf of St. Albert City Council, I want to express our sincere appreciation to the CMHC and Government of Canada for providing $11.8 million in funding to the City of St. Albert," St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron said.

"This funding will provide the city with an enhanced ability to drive transformational change to add an additional 302 new housing units over and above the average number of units developed annually within the next three years by expedition seven key Planning and Development initiatives."

The city will be implementing seven approved HAF initiatives:

  • Traffic Corridor Intensification Strategy
  • Quick Wins/Redistricting Zoning Changes
  • Neighbourhood Intensification Strategy
  • Public Lands Redevelopment Strategy for Housing
  • Electronic Building Permit Processing Program
  • Parking Regulation Study to Reduce Parking
  • Development Concierge Service Program

"This work will ensure that the city, region, and province remain well-positioned to accommodate growth, leveraging the high quality of life our community provides," Heron said.
