The sun fights to poke through the wildfire smoke in the air over St. Albert Wednesday morning, Aug. 14.

The wildfire smoke hanging in the air over much of central Alberta has triggered air quality advisories in St. Albert and beyond.

“During heavy smoke conditions, everyone is at risk regardless of their age or health,” the Environment Canada bulletin reads. “Fine particles in wildfire smoke pose the main health risk.”

Alberta’s live air quality map displayed values of seven to St. Albert and “10+” to Edmonton and Sherwood Park (the higher the number, the worse the air) at 10 a.m Wednesday.

The air quality advisory urges St. Albertans to limit time outdoors, and that if you have to go out, a fine particulate mask such as an N95 can help protect you.

People more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke such as seniors, pregnant women and pregnant people, people who smoke, infants and young children, people who work outdoors, people involved in strenuous outdoor exercise and people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, should avoid strenuous activities outdoors, according to Environment Canada.
