Heavy wildfire smoke blankets the Sturgeon River valley in St Albert on Saturday, May 20.

Wildfire smoke from northeastern British Columbia has rolled into Alberta overnight and is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility.

On Saturday during the day and into the night, the risk is expected to stay rated as 'very high' with smoke sitting at a 10+ out of 10 on the scale.

Conditions are expected to improve over eastern parts of the province tonight while other regions will see some improvement by Sunday afternoon.

Sunday conditions are going to improve in the region, dropping to a moderate risk or a 7 out of 10. By Sunday night the risk will drop to a low, or a a 3 out of 10.

Over northwestern Alberta conditions are likely to remain poor through Monday or possibly Tuesday.

There are currently 47 wildfires burning in Alberta.

Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.
