Six St. Albert youth face criminal charges for an armed robbery at a local convenience store late last year.

The males, aged 16 and 17, were arrested by St. Albert RCMP on March 20 and each faces charges of assault, robbery with a weapon and wearing a disguise with the intent to commit an offence.

“I think it’s really important to the community to know that we continue to work on our investigations, especially something like an armed robbery that is a serious offence,” said St. Albert RCMP Const. Janice Schoepp, adding this is an uncommon offence in the area.

On Dec. 23 at roughly 3:40 a.m., six individuals entered the Mac’s Convenience Store at 35 Giroux Rd. wearing masks, sunglasses and hoodies, with one male carrying a baseball bat.

The bat was used to break a store window and threaten the clerk, Schoepp said, adding no one was injured in the robbery.

The individuals stole an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and snacks and fled the scene on foot.

Schoepp said tips flooded in through Crime Stoppers, as well as through school resource officers – all of which were followed up on by RCMP members.

“In this case, it took a while to identify the people involved and we had a lot of Crime Stoppers tips,” she said. “We had some suspects but we needed to identify people.”

The store was equipped with video surveillance, which also assisted in the arrest.

The individuals will appear in St. Albert Provincial Youth Court at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1 to face their charges.
